Mancos senior Andrew Plunkett signed a letter of intent with Hastings College on Wednesday morning.

Plunkett will compete on the track and field team for the NAIA school in Hastings, Nebraska, in the Great Plains Athletic Conference.

Plunkett started communicating with the program over the summer and first visited the campus last month.

While he was also considering attending Northern Arizona University for its physical therapy program, he leapt at the opportunity to compete in track at the college level, and plans to major in pre-physical therapy at Hastings.

“When I first heard from coach Mahoney and he said I could run track, I was ecstatic,” Plunkett said.

He also felt right at home at the school with under 2,000 students.

“I kind of liked the small college feel, because that’s what I’m used to here,” he continued. “So that’s what made me lean towards them more.”

Broncos head coach Ryan Mahoney joined Plunkett on Wednesday and spoke about the recruiting process.

“I met with him and really liked his drive,” Mahoney said. “I really like multi-sport athletes. I come from a high school background, so I put a lot of emphasis on somebody that is just a good all-around athlete.”

“I think he’ll fit in really well with what we’re looking to do,” he continued. “I think that between high jump and triple jump we’ll just see where he clicks. But obviously, he’s got potential.”
