Competing at the Colorado Class 4A State Golf Tournament, Montezuma-Cortez High School senior Hayden Plewe put the finishing touches on an his high school golfing career.
Hitting the links at Walking Stick Golf Club in Pueblo, Sept. 29-30, Plewe finished tied for eighth place thanks to a two-round total score of 148.
Playing through two rain delays on Sept. 29, Plewe shot a 3-over-par score of 75 in the first round, which left him tied for 11th place. While the M-CHS senior was satisfied with his play during the first round, he felt that he could have done better.
“I felt like I left some shots out there,” said Plewe. “Overall, it wasn’t a bad round.”
Finding his swing in round two, Plewe performed even better, birdieing three of the last four holes on his way to a 1-over-par score of 73.
Thanks to his impressive second round, Plewe broke into the top 10 and finished just two shots behind the fourth-place finisher.
“My regular season, I was really consistent, and at state I was really consistent,” said Plewe. “I’m satisfied.”
Valor Christian won the team title, and Pueblo South’s Taylor Rodriguez was crowned individual champion after shooting a two-round total of 138.
With his high school career now behind him, Plewe plans to focus on basketball during the winter before serving a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-day Saints after graduating from high school in the spring.
Plewe then hopes to play college golf, although as of now, he has yet to select a school.
Asked what he will remember most about high school golf, Plewe said that the opportunity to play with his teammates and learn from his coaches stands out in his mind.
“I’ll remember day in and day out, getting better with my team and coaches,” said Plewe. “I had a great experience.”
