Deputy Ted Holland lets third-graders at Kemper Elementary sit in the saddle of Comanche, the latest addition to the Montezuma County Sheriff’s mounted patrol unit. The sheriff’s department has received grants of $25,000 from the Laura Musser Fund and $66,000 from the Colorado Justice Assistance Grant for the unit. Three other horses from the Bureau of Land Management wild horse and burro program have been donated after being trained at the Centennial Correctional Facility. A contest to name the three BLM horses is planned for local elementary students.
