Pedestrian in critical condition after being hit by truck in Durango

Bayfield resident suffered head injury

A man crossing College Drive at East Third Avenue in Durango suffered critical injuries Monday night after being hit by a gray Ford F-150.

Bayfield resident Ernie Eugene Lucero, 56, was walking across College Drive around 5:40 p.m. when he was hit by the eastbound truck, said Cmdr. Jacob Dunlop with the Durango Police Department.

Lucero suffered a head injury and may have suffered other injuries, Dunlop said. Two witnesses immediately offered medical aid before Lucero was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center for care, he said. Lucero was then taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, he said.

Lucero was listed in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, said Eric Mello, spokesman for St. Mary’s.

The truck driver, Carl Brown, 49, of Texas, may not face charges because he had the right of way. But if it is found Brown could have avoided hitting Lucero, he would be charged with careless driving, Dunlop said.

“All indications are he was traveling the speed limit, had the green light to travel through and did not exhibit signs of impairment,” Dunlop said.

The name of the driver has been corrected. The Durango Police Department incorrectly identified the driver in an earlier version of this story.
