The New Mexico business Painting With Class, which hosts monthly classes in Cortez, will host a Christmas ornament decorating event ahead of Christmas. Sign-ups are open.
The ornament decorating class will take place Saturday, Dec. 21 at Fiesta Mexicana, 430 State St. in Cortez, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
It costs $25 per person for all the supplies needed, along with step-by-step instructions to creating a festive, wooden holiday ornament.
Marcy Clark, one of the owners of Painting With Class, said she comes to Cortez on the third Saturday of every month, hosting classes with a different theme or medium each time. Clark lives in Farmington, and her family is from Cortez.
She teaches classes in Cortez, Farmington and Aztec.
On Dec. 21, Clark will host two classes. The first, at 2 p.m., is a snowman painting class, and the ornament painting class will follow at 5 p.m.
She shared that she can usually teach up to 40 students at Fiesta Mexicana. Acrylic paints are the type of paints utilized.
Clark has been doing these kinds of classes since 2014 after her former manager encouraged her to start giving art classes.
“I just love art, and I kind of painted on my own, and I’ve done some classes and painted with my family, and we would post what we had done,” Clark said. “I just love it when people leave and they’re really happy with what they’ve done. … Everybody’s always a little bit better than they thought they were going to be.”
Clark isn’t the only teacher. Her daughter has also started teaching some of the classes, and her 8-year-old granddaughter has helped teach a class as well.
“She’s been painting with me since she was three,” Clark said. “And my granddaughter, we went to a living assistant house, and they were doing a Grandparent’s Day, and so we painted a family tree. My granddaughter came with me and helped teach that class.”
To round out the family aspect of Painting With Class, Clark added that her husband and her daughter’s partner are the muscle behind the business, helping set up and tear down after the classes are over.
“We get to do it as a couple, and we get to spend time with each other while we’re there,” Clark said. “We do that, all four of us, and we all have other jobs that we work full-time during the day.”
