Our View: Clark Craig for House District 59

Clark Craig has held a seat on all or almost all of the boards that shape Ignacio’s current and future activities, library, planning and town council, as well as La Plata County’s planning commission. As Ignacio’s mayor, he’s been an enthusiastic and engaged advocate for the tri-ethnic community. With housing, the topic of the day in Ignacio and in most parts of the state, he’s a leader.

At the La Plata County Economic Development Alliance’s membership meeting this week, he humorously overlaid the theme music of “Rocky” to the computer-generated video tour of the residential construction that’s soon to be underway in a new neighborhood in Ignacio.

In addition to his multiple local government experiences, Craig is accessible, quick on his feet with a sense of humor and looks to make acquaintances easily. He doesn’t mention politics or party, just what needs to be done and is underway. As a Republican, in the surely to continue to be heavily Democratic state House, his qualities should be helpful in adding Republican components to legislation.

The Herald’s editorial board suggests a vote for Clark Craig for the 59th House District to succeed term limited Barbara McLachlan.

Craig supports protecting and building strong families, recognizes child care is a long unmet need and pledges to work to remedy this. A traditional Republican, Clark supports limited government. Which brings us to one difficulty with this endorsement. He supports limits on the number of weeks at which an abortion can take place, an action the government would legislate.

We hope, as with his support of same-sex marriage, he’ll respect the desires of the people he represents and the implications of the government being involved in a woman’s health care decisions.

Opposing Craig is Durango School District 9-R board member Katie Stewart, whose family has a history of four generations in the county. She’s an advocate for expanded health care access which would include telehealth, small-business needs and workforce skills training at the high school level. Stewart is a Democrat.

While Stewart has much to offer given her school board membership and time in the community, the Herald’s editorial board believes that the breadth and depth of Clark Craig’s involvement and leadership in Ignacio makes him the better choice to advocate for the district that includes La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and almost all of Montezuma counties.
