Operation Graduation plans for 2019

Program offers safe, sober celebration for grads

Operation Graduation — a community program that provides a safe, substance-free celebration for high school seniors on graduation night — is in the planning and fundraising stage.

Families and friends of Dolores students are trying to give graduates a safe alternative to alcohol and drug use by providing a fun-filled celebration that replaces the temptation to “go out and party.”

Operation Graduation began as a pilot program in 1997, with about half the graduating seniors attending an all-night “lockdown.” It has grown in popularity each year with most, if not all, seniors attending. This will be the 22nd annual Operation Graduation.

One of the incentives for students to participate in the night of music, games, food and entertainment is the chance to win big-ticket items donated by event partners.

In past years, students have taken home laptops, mountain bikes, televisions, microwaves and many other useful items. Each graduate also receives a laundry basket or tote filled with a variety of items for stocking their new dwellings.

Funding for the giveaways depends on community contributions. Sponsoring partners are widely publicized leading up to the event on promotional materials, and their advertising banners are displayed at the event.

Donations to Operation Graduation 2019 are requested by May 10. Deliver to: PO Box 2210 Dolores, CO, 81323. You may also drop off a donation to Kim Archuleta Monday through Thursday from 8-3:30 a.m. at 1280 N. Mildred Road in Cortez or call for a pickup.
