One person was killed and another was wounded in a shooting Thursday morning at the Animas Valley Mall, according to the Farmington Police Department.

Piedra Vista High School, about a mile from the mall, entered a brief lockdown as a safety measure.

Police public information officer Shanice Gonzales said the shooting occurred on the south side of the mall near English Road. The victim’s name was being withheld until the next of kin was notified.

A second shooting victim was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, according to a post on the police department’s Facebook page at 12:14 p.m.

The suspect remains at large. A description of the suspect has not been released.

Gonzales said she received a phone call about the shooting at 11:20 a.m., about 20 minutes after the shooting occurred.

Because of the active investigation, residents were asked to avoid the area surrounding the mall.

Piedra Vista High School was advised to enter lockdown at 11:15 a.m. as a safety measure, according to a notification sent to parents and guardians. The lockdown was lifted at 11:30 a.m., and a second notification from the school stated that staff would continue “to be alert and diligent to help keep our entire campus safe.”
