I was aghast to read the letter on March 18 from the nurse who assisted a woman from Texas in obtaining an abortion. As a medical professional, the nurse had the duty to first address the woman’s mental state and provide medical treatment and/or counseling so she could make an informed decision about the child she was carrying. The nurse should have also directed her to resources to assist with her unemployment and housing loss. But instead, the nurse sees pregnancy as a problem rather than what it really is, a gift of bringing life to this world.
Had the mother been directed to an organization like Lifeguard in Durango, or many others throughout the state that assist with counseling, financial and personal support throughout the pregnancy and beyond, she would have been able to live the rest of her life knowing she chose not to kill her child. But unfortunately, she was brainwashed into thinking she was the victim of a horrific thing that needed to be eliminated. Where is the compassion and understanding for the child? So many couples are waiting to adopt children, yet our medical community and others continue to ignore the value of human life by encouraging abortion, just to “fix a problem.” Shameful.
