Two Durango High School soccer players scored all-state honors after their performances this fall, CHSAANow.com announced Wednesday.
Junior midfielder Cedar Newman landed on the Class 4A all-state first team.
Senior Sam Carozza earned an all-state honorable mention.
Newman scored 12 goals and assisted five more this season while stealing the ball away from opposing players 319 times.
Newman also came up big in some of the team’s biggest games, scoring both of Durango’s goals in the second round of the playoffs against D’Evelyn, to help propel the Demons into the quarterfinals for just the third time in the program’s history.
Newman was also named the 5A/4A Southwestern League’s boys soccer player of the year this season.
Carozza also scored 12 goals and had five assists for the Demons this season. In addition to kicking in goals, Carozza kicked field goals and extra points for the Demon football team, converting on 52 of 55 point-after attempts.
Luiz Aguirre of Grand Junction High School, who received an honorable mention, was the only other player from the league honored. No players from Bayfield or Montezuma-Cortez received honors.
Northfield’s Eduardo Hernandez was named the Class 4A player of the year while the 3A honor went to Ross Barlow of Roaring Fork.
The 2021 all-state boys soccer teams are presented by CHSAANow.com, ColoradoPreps.com and MaxPreps.
The teams were created after a lengthy process that included nominations from leagues, and then a vote of coaches.
