Motorcyclist killed in crash with SUV on U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango

Road was closed for more than four hours

A motorcycle and an SUV were involved in a crash Tuesday on U.S. Highway 160 west of Durango, killing the motorcyclist, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash occurred at 11:27 a.m. near mile marker 75, which is just west of the Durango West I subdivision. The highway remained closed for more than four hours, reopening about 4:15 p.m., said Lisa Schwantes, spokeswoman with the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the motorcyclist died at the scene, according to a CSP spokesman in Denver. A Flight For Life helicopter was called to respond, but the helicopter was later canceled.

The crash involved a 2020 Harley-Davidson and a Jeep Cherokee.

The driver of the Jeep Cherokee was attempting to turn left from Durango Ridge Road to go east on Highway 160. For unknown reasons, the driver failed to yield to the motorcyclist, who was traveling west on the highway, said Capt. John Trentini with the Colorado State Patrol.

He declined to identify the drivers until the motorcyclist’s next of kin could be notified.

The driver of the Jeep is a local resident; it was not immediately known if the motorcyclist is local, but the motorcyclist had family in the area, Trentini said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected factors in the crash. The motorcyclist was wearing a helmet.
