Montezuma County seeks Sand Canyon parking solution

Parking at the Sand Canyon trailhead.

Montezuma County commissioners say they have found evidence that they might own a right of way near the popular Sand Canyon trailhead that could help provide room for additional parking.

The trailhead’s uneven, slickrock surface is often overrun with vehicles and horse trailers, forcing visitors to park along County Road G and causing a traffic hazard on the narrow road.

The Bureau of Land Management recently purchased the nearby Lamb House and has been working on a parking solution at that location as well, but has had to adjust plans to avoid archaeological sites.
