For the Montezuma-Cortez High School volleyball team to compete in the Southwest League, a strong youth volleyball program is a necessity.

With that in mind, M-CHS volleyball coaches and players hosted a four-day camp at the Cortez Middle School for players from fourth to eighth grade.

Twenty-one players participated in the camp, which was held June 9-12, and by the end of the four-day event, nearly everyone appeared pleased.

“We had a really good turnout, which is exciting,” said recently hired M-CHS head coach Andi Pickens. “We started out with the fundamentals. We escalated each day and (eventually progressed) to blocking and base defense.”

Key to the camp’s success were contributions made by several M-CHS volleyball, providing several useful tips, relished the coaching experience.

“I like coaching,” said sophomore Kate Treinen. “It’s a lot different than playing. It’s good to learn how other girls work.”

“It has been fun to teach the (younger players) how to play,” added sophomore Rylee Lindsley.

Also integral to the camp’s success, according to those who participated, was the ability of coaches to create a fun and focused environment.

“(The camp) has been fun,” said 11-year-old Paige Yarbrough. “I like the coaches.”

“I like how (the coaches) keep making us do (drills) until we do them right,” added 12-year-old Mackenzie Williams. “I’ve improved on my passing.”

A truly valuable experience for all involved, M-CHS volleyball coaches are hopeful that the camp will generate interest in similar events in the future.
