The Montezuma-Cortez RE-1 School District is calling for nominations for new school directors to serve on its Board of Education in this year’s biennial election, according to an Aug. 5 news release.
The district is taking nominations until Aug. 27, and the election will be Nov. 2.
The district is seeking directors to fulfill vacancies in Districts A and G for two years, and in Districts B, D, E and F for four-year terms.
In total, there are six open positions.
Board members are voted into their roles for four years. It is unclear why the new directors will only serve two years in Districts A and G.
Superintendent Risha VanderWey could not be reached for immediate comment.
To be eligible for nomination, a candidate must must reside in the district they are applying to represent and be a registered voter in RE-1 elections for at least 12 consecutive months leading up to the election.
To appear on the election ballot, a candidate must write a statement of intent to run for the position and collect at least 50 signatures from registered voters in this year’s school district election.
Interested applicants can obtain nomination petitions at the Montezuma-Cortez School District Administration office at 400 N. Elm St. in the office of the executive assistant to the superintendent and school board.
The district is accepting nominations up until 5 p.m. Aug. 27.
The district website’s Board of Education page offers more insight into the roles of its members.
Board member positions are voluntary and unpaid, according to the district’s website. On average, board members dedicate three to six hours per week to their roles.
Study sessions, meetings and public commentary take place the third Tuesday of each month.
Board members often don’t have a background in education, and thus bring unique perspective to board meetings, the district’s website says.
“The ‘learning curve’ for members is steep and they dedicate much time in training to learn about school finance and district management,“ the district website says. ”Board members are an invaluable contributor to our students and to district success!“
