The Montezuma-Cortez School District put all schools on lockdown about 2:43 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a call from law enforcement indicating a threat had been directed at the high school, the school district said in an email.
The threats were made earlier this month, and the Cortez Police Department received the warning from Los Angeles on Tuesday, according to Assistant Chief of Police Andy Brock.
Brock said the phone that sent the text messages was originally pinged in Durango and then was tracked to the Cortez Walmart store on East Main Street. That’s when law enforcement took action.
By 3:04 p.m., Brock told The Journal, the phone had left Cortez, and a police scanner stated that it was pinged on U.S. Highway 491.
All Montezuma-Cortez schools remained on lockdown until 3:18 p.m., and students were released at their normal time.
