Montezuma-Cortez declares school board vacancy

Kara Suckla steps down; district has 60 days to find replacement

The Montezuma-Cortez school board is currently one member down and is seeking candidates to fill the vacancy.

The open seat comes after Kara Suckla decided not to seek reelection in the latest November election, and no one else ran for the seat.

“It’s been a pleasure to serve with all of you,” Suckla said at the Nov. 19 board meeting for the Montezuma-Cortez School District Re-1, where she was presented with an award for her service.

Suckla represented District G, which covers a wide swath of land west of U.S. Highway 491 and north of County Road G. She was appointed to the board in late 2015, and then re-elected for the post in November 2017.

“The difference you’ve made in the lives of our students is ultimately what we’re about,” Superintendent Lori Haukeness said at last week’s board meeting.

The board officially declared a vacancy at the meeting.

According to board rules, the vacancy can be posted for up to 60 days, although the board can interview candidates before that time is up. The board scheduled interviews to take place at 5 p.m. on Jan. 21.

If no candidates emerge by this date, Board President Sherri Wright will be able to name someone to fill the post.
