Money talks, democracy walks

The impassioned debates we’re engaged in about health care, guns, climate, elections, taxes, etc. are certainly important and relevant. However, I can’t help but think pontificating the pros and cons, moral and ethical positions, and political impacts misses an important point. The most powerful lobbies in the United States spend billions of dollars electing and influencing politicians who implement policies and laws to protect the interests of the oil and gas, pharmaceutical, insurance, real estate and gun industries.

We can write letters, march, sign petitions, leave voice messages and make donations – and we must – but until the day when more candidates refuse to take PAC money, Citizens United is reversed, campaign finance reform is implemented and term limits are established, the system will continue to be corrupt, broken and indifferent to the will of the majority.
