Monday roundup: Volleyball, soccer and cross-country underway

Aug. 23: Monticello 3, M-CHS 0

The Montezuma-Cortez High School Panthers fall to 0-1 after dropping their home opener, 26-24, 25-18, 26-24. Home matches against Ignacio on Tuesday and Dolores on Sept. 3 await M-CHS.

Volleyball

Aug. 23: Mancos 3, Buena Vista 1

Aug. 24: Mancos 3, Salida 1

The Mancos Bluejays opened the Brianna Wyatt era with a pair of wins on their home floor, topping Buena Vista 25-18, 25-20, 21-25, 25-15 before beating Salida 25-11, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23. The Jays get set for a clash against Dove Creek on Tuesday night in Mancos.

Volleyball

Aug. 23 - Dove Creek 2, Plateau Valley 0

Aug. 24: Rangely 2, Dove Creek 1

The Dove Creek Bulldogs opened the season with a tournament in Rangely, and picked up their first two wins of the season over Moffat County (25-13, 25-11) and Plateau Valley (25-13, 25-15) before falling to the hosts (22-25, 25-18, 10-15).

Boys soccer

Aug. 23: Ridgway 2, M-CHS 1

The Panthers opened the season with a road loss to the Demons, with senior Carter Tanner scoring a second half goal to cut the halftime deficit. However, M-CHS couldn’t complete the comeback, and will now look to bounce back this weekend in Gypsum against Eagle Valley.

Cross-country

The Dolores boys and girls both claimed eighth as a team in their races at Cheyenne Mountain Stampede on the state championship course on Saturday, Aug. 24. Top finishers for the boys were Owen Lowe (32nd) and Joseph Padilla (41st), while the girls were led by Elia Lowe (27th) and Maya Lowe (37th).

Mancos ran at the same meet, and Cuinn Archer led the Mancos boys (69th), while Teagan Archer paced the girls (56th). The Bluejays did not collect team scores in either race.
