Mom hits son on head with baseball bat; no charges filed

A 51-year-old woman allegedly hit her 28-year-old son on the head with a baseball bat on Saturday afternoon in Cortez.

Cortez Police Lt. Andy Brock said no charges were filed in the assault because the male victim was also the agitator in the incident and has mental health issues.

He said it was a family situation, words were exchanged, and people got upset.

“He just seemed like he might have been a little bit out of control, and Mom tapped him back into reality,” Brock said.

The police department received the call at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The assault occurred on the 700 block of South Market Street.

The Cortez Police Department records technician refused to release the incident report.

Brock said the 28-year-old man admitted to taking meth and he was so agitated that it was hard to tell what was going on. Police officers transported the man to the hospital for medical clearance, Brock said, then determined he should go to a detox facility before talking to mental health evaluators.

“That’s just kind of standard procedure ... anytime mental health needs to talk to somebody, we have to get them cleared at the hospital,” Brock said.
