Mesa Verde National Park to host fetish carving demonstration

The Journal

Mesa Verde National Park will host a Zuni fetish carving demonstration by Eldred and Marilyn Quam from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the park’s Visitor and Research Center.

The Quams will demonstrate how they carve a variety of stone types into the desired shapes and explain the polishing and finishing process. They will have a number of finished pieces available for sale.

The Quams are a husband-and wife team of Zuni carvers known for their small fetishes. They are known and respected for their detailed carvings, representative of the Zuni culture, and are featured in the book “Zuni Fetishes and Carvings,” by Kent McManis.

This is a free demonstration open to the public. For more information, visit www.mesaverde.org.
