Mesa Verde luminaria canceled; open house might be rescheduled

Event set for Thursday night canceled but might take place in January or February

This year’s luminaria event at Mesa Verde National Park was canceled because of winter weather, although it might still take place early next year, according to an announcement on the park’s Facebook page.

The current winter storm moving through the region posed public safety concerns, the announcement said.

It was the second consecutive year the annual holiday open house was called off. Last year, pandemic concerns prevented the illumination of the ancient Pueblo dwellings.

This year, the free event was slated to take place from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Visitors were encouraged to spend time at the Far View and Mesa Top Loop areas.

In the news release, park Superintendent Kayci Cook Collins, who took over the position from Cliff Spencer in August, said:

“We know just how important this winter tradition is and understand the disappointment visitors will feel. Therefore, we intend to make the magic happen at a later date. We will reschedule this event for January or February if possible and will share that information once it is available. We thank everyone for their understanding and support. It was a difficult decision.”
