Five trustee positions for the Mancos town board, plus the mayor, are up for grabs in the April 5 mail-ballot election.
The terms for mayor Rachel Simbeck and trustees Mathew Baskin and Will Stone are all up. They can all run again. The terms for trustees Todd Kearns and Queenie Barz are up as well, and they are both term limited.
The seat of Trustee Darrel Ellis, who recently passed away, is also up for election. The board will appoint a replacement for Ellis’ vacancy, and that person will have to run for the seat in the election.
Letters of interest are being accepted for the board vacancy until Dec. 31, then the board will choose from the applicants.
Interested candidates must be at least 18 years of age and must have lived within the Mancos town limits for at least 12 months.
Nomination packets for the office of mayor or trustee will be available on Jan. 5 at Mancos Town Hall. Petitions must be filled out and returned by Jan. 25 in person.
“It has all the information you need to be placed on the ballot,” said Mancos clerk Heather Alvarez.
Candidates must get 10 signatures from registered voters who live within the town limits. One person can potentially sign for multiple petitions, however there are limiting factors.
People can only sign the number of petitions for which the number of seats that are open. So there are five trustee seats open, therefore one person can only sign five petitions for trustee. Alvarez suggest that candidates get 20 signatures in case some are disqualified.
Who the candidates are will be announced in early February.
