Mancos volleyball team wins three straight over SJBL competition

Lady Jays win three straight for the first time since 2014

After an impressive stretch that included victories over three San Juan Basin League foes, the Mancos High School volleyball team is brimming with confidence, and players are smiling as a result of their team’s first three-game winning streak in four years.

The Lady Jays’ first victory during the streak came Sept. 6, when the team traveled to Ignacio and dominated throughout a 25-16, 25-16, 25-22 victory.

Magdalena Halls led Mancos offensively with 13 kills, and Morgan Rose chipped in six point-ending smashes for her team. Lady Jays setter Emmalee Asnicar also enjoyed a solid match with 24 assists. Rose led Mancos defensively with nine digs, and Kasey Wallace had eight digs for her team.

The Lady Jays’ next win came in Telluride on Sept. 8 by a score of 25-17, 25-16, 25-13. Rose led the Lady Jays offense with 10 kills, and Isis Jaime and Halls each had six.

On defense, the Lady Jays were led by Halls, who was credited with 11 digs. Wallace had eight digs, and Ericka Peacock had seven digs for Mancos. Asnicar came through with 26 assists for her team.

The most recent win of the Lady Jays’ three-game winning streak came in thrilling fashion when the team came from behind to defeat Nucla, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 15-6, on the road on Sept. 11.

Statistics for the exciting contest were not available as of press time, but with the win, the Lady Jays improved their record to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the San Juan Basin League.

Currently sitting second in the SJBL standings, Mancos will return to the practice court to prepare for its next match against Dove Creek, which will take place in Mancos on Sept. 25. Dove Creek defeated Mancos in both matches between the two teams earlier this season.
