With their seasons winding down, the Mancos High School boys’ and girls’ track teams traveled to Pueblo and Pagosa Springs for back-to-back meets against tough competition.
Opening last week at the Pueblo Twilight on May 4, the boys’ team was led by sophomore Caden Showalter, who placed sixth in the shot put (46 feet, 10½ inches) and 20th in the discus (119 feet, 8 inches) while competing in a meet that featured 37 teams.
Also turning in a solid performance at the Pueblo Twilight was senior distance star Jake McKie, who utilized his ever-improving kick to finish 10th in the 800-meter run (2:01.45). Not far behind was teammate Breccen Morelli, who crossed the line 17th (2:06.36) in the 800-meter run.
Sophomore Anthony Medina led his team in the sprinting events at the Pueblo Twilight when he finished 18th in the 200-meter dash (23.81) and Hunter Hoover led Mancos in the jumping event with a 12th-place finish in the high jump (12 feet, 7 inches). Cameron Fury and Caden Galloway tied for 15th as each cleared the bar at 5 feet, 5 inches.
On the girls’ side, Mancos was led at the Pueblo Twilight by freshman Grace Manning, who placed eighth in the 800-meter run (2:31.24). Ericka Peacock crossed the line 34th in the 200-meter dash (30.95), and Kylie Guiles placed 45th in the 1600-meter run (7:38.17).
On day after competing in Pueblo, both Mancos teams competed in the Terry Alley Invitational in Pagosa Springs, and several athletes again performed well.
Among the top performers for the boys’ team were Showalter, who placed first in the shot put (43 feet, ¼ inch) and second in the discus (127 feet, 6½ inches), and John Lund, who crossed the line second in the 800-meter run (2:11.86).
Anthony Medina finished second in the triple jump (39 feet, 8½ inches), Caden Galloway placed second in the high jump (5 feet, 5 inches), and Griff Huver ranked third in the long jump (18 feet, 11¼ inches).
Other Top 10 finishers in individual events for the boys’ team included Hunter Hoover, who placed fifth in the triple jump (36 feet, 8 inches), Cameron Fury, who placed seventh in the high jump (5 feet, 3 inches), Zane Wilson, who finished eighth in the 1600-meter run (5:27.49), Coleman Hoover, who placed eighth in the triple jump (30 feet, 3½ inches), and Alex Fleitz, who placed 10th in the 400-meter dash (59.60).
The Mancos girls’ team was led in Pagosa Springs by Manning, who ran clear of the field and placed first in the 400-meter run (1:04.19).
Other Top 10 finishers in individual events included Morgan Rose, who finished 10th in the long jump (12 feet, ¼ inch), Zoel Steele, who placed 10th in the 100-meter hurdles (24.50), Hope Morelli, who crossed the line 10th in the 1600-meter run (8:44.05), and Geri Montoya, who raced to a 10th-place finish in the 100-meter dash (14.75).
Next up for both Mancos teams will be the Grand Junction Tiger Invitational, which will take place in Grand Junction on May 10.
