Mancos to host pancake breakfast in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

For the sixth year in a row, Mancos will celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with a free pancake breakfast. On Monday, Jan. 19 from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Mt. Lookout Grange, on the corner of Spruce Street and Grand Avenue, volunteers will serve up a breakfast and inspiration for King.

Breakfast will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and maple syrup.

"Everything will be made from local, organically grown food," said Betsy Harrison, an organizer of the event.

Well, except for the maple syrup.

Harrison said the breakfast started six years ago when an AmeriCorps volunteer needed to do a community project.

"It has been very successful with the help of community volunteers and now the Grange is very involved," said Gretchen Groenke.

Harrison said there will be photographs and quotes from King at the event for inspiration for the day.

"We felt Mr. King and the whole issue of civil rights needed to be recognized," Harrison said of the event.

Groenke said they need help Monday morning and Sunday evening for setup. Groenke said about 80 people attended the breakfast last year, and they need help Monday morning and Sunday evening for setup.
