The Mancos Middle School boys track team brought home the San Juan Basin League Championship last Thursday at the league meet in Ignacio.

The Blue Jays – a team consisting of sixth, seventh and eighth graders and coached by Heath Showalter, Josh Gardner and Brandi Durr – also won their home meet on April 13 and the Newcomb, New Mexico meet on April 14.

The Jays’ outstanding season also included a new school record, as eighth grader Caden Showalter’s shot-put heave of 45 feet and 4 inches replaced the old record of 39-2.

The league track championship was not the Jays’ first taste of success.

The MMS boys also won the SJBL Championship in football and basketball this school year.

The track team is scheduled to finish the season tomorrow at Dove Creek, weather permitting.
