Mancos getting sister city in France

Southwestern Colorado and northwestern France may seem like worlds apart, but the Mancos Town Board hopes to close the distance through a sister city program.

Town Administrator Andrea Phillips said the town council in Feins, France, inquired about becoming sister cities, to foster democracy and establish cultural ties and information exchanges.

Mancos has relationships with Mancos, Peru, and Thornton, Colo. Thornton helped with a Cottonwood Park suitability study and in planning for Boyle Park irrigation system.

Mancos' relationship with Mancos, Peru, was established through a resolution in 2006. Officials from Peru visited Mancos and attended a board meeting.

"I think it'd be a great way to get our name out there and maybe have visitors (from Feins)," said trustee Queenie Barz.

Feins is a farming community in northwestern France known for dairy and beef production, and its apple orchards. Its population is about 920.

There's no cost to the participate in the program.
