Mancos football team rebounds with big win over Norwood

Bluejays rush for 338 yards and six touchdowns during 50-8 victory

One week after losing to Sanford, the Mancos High School football team returned with a vengeance and clobbered Norwood High School, 50-8, on Oct. 17.

Leading the way for the Bluejays on the team’s senior night was sophomore running back Chase Moore, who rushed for 140 yards and four touchdowns and caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Breccen Morelli.

Morelli also ran for 87 yards and one score. Senior Anthony Medina once again showcased his game-breaking speed while rushing for 61 yards and a 29-yard touchdown that brought Bluejays fans to their feet.

Mancos was led defensively by junior Christian Cova, who was credited with a game-high nine tackles. Medina had one interception, juniors Colt Fury and Lot Martin each had one sack, and senior Nick Dan and Moore each recovered a fumble.

The Bluejays scored first three minutes into the first quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run by Moore, then struck again a few minutes later when Moore ran the ball in from 2 yards out.

Morelli then completed a 39-yard touchdown pass to Moore to put his team ahead 20-0, and the Bluejays offense capped the first quarter when Moore ran in from 47 yards out to put his team ahead 28-0.

A 48-yard run by Morelli with nine minutes left in the second quarter put Mancos ahead 34-0, and a run by Medina put the Bluejays up 42-0 with six minutes to go in the half.

With the clock running throughout the second half because of the Bluejays lead, Mancos went ahead 50-0 on a 9-yard run by Moore midway through the third quarter.

The Bluejays pulled most of its starters early in the fourth quarter before yielding Norwood’s only touchdown with about five minutes to go.

With the victory, Mancos improved its record to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the A-8 Mountain League. The Bluejays, who are ranked No. 5 on csaanow.com, will play their next game against Dolores Huerta Prep at Sargent High School on Oct. 26.
