Bluejays start fast, lead 38-6 at halftime

Playing at home Friday night, Mancos High School defeated Monticello 52-13 in a nonconference football game.

The Mancos Bluejays got off to a fast start, striking first with a nearly 50-yard passing score from quarterback Ayden Mathews to Broc Imel. Kail Wayman added a two-point conversion for the 8-0 lead.

Wayman followed up with a rushing touchdown to put the Bluejays ahead 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Wayman intercepted a Monticello pass, then ran for a 15-yard rushing TD a couple of minutes later. Imel caught a pass for the two-point conversion to put the Bluejays ahead 22-0.

With about 3 minutes left in the half, Mathews recovered a Monticello fumble and passed to Wayman for a touchdown. Mathews capped the drive with a rushing two-point conversion for a 38-0 lead.

Monticello got on the scoreboard with a passing touchdown with a minute to go before halftime but failed to covert the two-point play and headed into the locker room down 38-6.

Levi Martin caught a touchdown pass in both the third and fourth quarters to give Mancos a 52-6 lead before Monticello topped off its scoring with a passing touchdown and extra point to cut the Mancos victory to 52-13.
