Mancos Cowboy Run set for June 22

Half marathon, 5K options available
Journal file

The Mancos Cowboy Half Marathon will take place on Saturday, June 22.

Runners will be winding their way through the Mancos Valley next week for the annual Mancos Cowboy Half Marathon.

The June 22 event raises funds for the Mancos Public Library, and features two running options: a 5K race and a half marathon.

Both races will start and end in the library parking lot at 211 W. First St.

The half marathon kicks off at 7 a.m., and will loop down from the library through private and BLM land, lightly traveled county roads, and wrap up with a downtown course sector. About 60% of the run will take place on gravel roads and trails, and 40% on pavement.

“The roughly two-mile off-road portion of the race that winds through private and BLM land (under agreement with the BLM) is an undeveloped trail, narrow and rocky in some spots, and runners are urged to use caution,” the event website says. “This portion winds its way through land that burned in 2012.”

Runners in the 5K race will take off at 7:30 a.m. This course is an out-and-back, mostly on a “lightly traveled, paved, two-lane county road,” according to the website.

Strollers are permitted, but race organizers urge caution, as the road will not be closed to vehicle traffic for the race.

There will also be a free Kids Fun Run starting at 9:30 a.m.; no registration is required for this race.

Runners can enjoy post-race provisions, served by Mancos Friends of the Library with donations by Absolute Bakery & Cafe, Moose & More, Zuma Natural Foods, P&D Grocery, Durango Coca Cola, and Tailwind Nutrition.

Those 21 and older will also be given a free beer from the Mancos Brewing Company.

Parking will be available on Grand and Bauer avenues, along with at Boyle Park. The library parking lot will be closed to drivers to keep the race path clear.

Registration through June 21 is $60 for the half-marathon and $30 for the 5K. Race day registration before 7 a.m. is also an option, although the cost goes up to $70 for the half marathon and $35 for the 5K.

To sign up, visit the event website or drop by the library front desk.
