Mancos chamber honors Citizen of the Year Simmons

Mancos Citizen of the Year Linda Simmons was honored at a Mancos Valley Chamber of Commerce social event on Feb. 2.

The event took place at the Mancos Visitor Center. Simmons is president of the Mancos Historical Society, and she is involved with various community projects, including the Mancos Creative District.

In an acceptance speech, Simmons said she accepted the award on behalf of all the volunteers in the Mancos Valley. She said things would stop if the area went just a week without all the volunteer workers who help out.

“So much of what happens in the valley is accomplished by volunteers,” she said.

Last year’s Mancos Citizen of the Year, Betsy Harrison, presented Simmons with a plaque for the award. Before giving Simmons the award, Harrison tacked several dozen index cards to a bulletin board that had words that represented Simmons written on them, such as “teacher,” “mother” and “helpful.”
