MANCOS – After a somewhat slow start to its home contest against Monument Valley High School on Tuesday, the Mancos High School basketball team came alive during an impressive second quarter and stormed to a 76-41 victory.

Leading the way offensively for the Bluejays were senior Anthony Medina, who scored a game-high 21 points, and senior Caden Showalter, who scored 20 points. Both Mancos veterans converted 10 of their 13 field goal attempts on the evening.

Although the final score was indicative of a complete blowout, a relatively slow start by the Bluejays allowed Monument Valley to keep things close throughout much of a first quarter that ended with Mancos leading 20-14.

The second quarter was a completely different story, however, as Mancos fed off cheers from its home fans and outscored Monument Valley 31-6. Thanks to its highest-scoring quarter of the season, Mancos carried a 51-20 lead into halftime.

While Medina and Caden Showalter stole the show offensively, the Bluejays also received solid offensive performances from sophomore Connor Showalter, who scored 15 points, and sophomore Evan Sehnert, who scored 12 points.

Sophomore Edgar Hernandez also contributed six points for the Bluejays, who converted 34 of their 60 field goal attempts.

With their record now at 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the San Juan Basin League, the Bluejays returned to their home court against Sargent High School Thursday before they ventured onto the road to face Ouray on Jan. 18.
