Connor Showalter scores 20 points

Heading into his team’s season, Mancos High School boys basketball coach Elijah Knepper that his team’s offense would be good.

But Knepper might not have envisioned performances like the one that his team delivered against Telluride High School on Feb. 6.

Junior Connor Showalter led Mancos in scoring with 20 points in the 73-44 win, while seniors Caden Showalter and Anthony Medina, and sophomore Evan Sehnert scored in double figures with 16 points, 15 points and 14 points, respectively.

Orchestrating the Mancos offense, which converted 31 of its 56 field goal attempts for a field goal percentage of 55%, was junior point guard Christian Cova, with a career-high 11 assists.

Caden Showalter’s 12 rebounds in addition to his scoring gave him the 51st double-double of his high school career. The Mancos senior is now just two double-doubles shy of tying Colorado’s all-time record.

With its record now at 12-3 overall and 6-1 in the SJBL, Mancos will square off against rival Dolores High School at home Feb. 11, before returning to its home court to face Nucla High School Feb. 13.
