Man sends Dolores County Courthouse into lockdown

The Dolores County Courthouse went into lockdown Thursday afternoon after county resident Clayton Campbell made threats toward Dolores and Montezuma county elected officials, according to the Dolores County Sheriff’s Office.

Campbell called Sheriff Don Wilson and made the threats, leading to a search for Campbell on Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office said in a news release..

The Durango Police Department located Campbell in Durango, and he was arrested on a warrant from Dolores County Courts, and on suspicion of menacing and retaliating against a judge, the news release said.

The Sheriff’s Office said it would release more information as the investigation continues.

After initially being held in the La Plata County Jail, Campbell was taken to the Montezuma County Detention Facility.

“The Sheriff took this as a credible threat to cause the Dolores County Sheriff’s Office to take precautionary measures at the Dolores County Court House and surrounding public buildings to assure the safety of our community,” Wilson wrote in the release.

The Cortez Police Department and Montezuma County Sheriff’s Office aided in the search for Campbell, the release said.

An 11:51 a.m. Nixle alert from Dolores County alerted residents that the courthouse was locked down due to an active threat.

Another Nixle alert at 1:53 p.m. said that the person responsible for the threats was apprehended, and that the courthouse would reopen Friday.
