Man faces assault, robbery charges after fight

Assault conviction carries 5-year term

A Cortez man faces second-degree assault and robbery charges after an April 10 fight.

Vernon Begay, 28, was jailed after a fight about 8:45 p.m. April 10 that left Julivan Denetdeal, 31, of Montezuma County, in critical condition, according to Cortez Police.

Denetdeal was airlifted to St. Mary’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Grand Junction with serious head and facial wounds, according to a police report.

Begay has been charged with felony second-degree assault causing serious bodily injury and robbery in connection with the case.

A second-degree assault conviction carries a prison sentence of at least five years.

Montezuma County Judge JenniLynn Lawrence set Begay’s bond at $50,000 cash or surety on April 13.

He appeared in Montezuma County Court on Wednesday and is due back for a preliminary hearing on May 24 at 2:30 p.m.
