‘Make it clear, VFW nonpartisan’

I am writing in response to letters to the editor that names the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I want to make it clear that the VFW is a nonpartisan organization and does not endorse or support any political candidates or parties. One of our core values is to serve our communities.

The VFW is a veterans service organization, founded in 1899 right here in Colorado and was chartered by Congress in 1936. With 23,000 VFW and Auxiliary members in Colorado and nearly 1.7 million in more than 6,700 Posts worldwide, “No one does more for veterans.” The VFW and its Auxiliaries are dedicated to veterans’ service, legislative advocacy, and military and community service programs. We serve veterans, their families and our communities with a range of services to include:

• Advocacy for veterans’ benefits

• Assistance with VA claims

• Scholarships for veterans and their dependents

• Community service projects

All Congressionally Chartered Veteran Service Organizations are nonpartisan and believe that all veterans should be treated with respect, regardless of their political affiliation. We hope it is understood that the VFW’s primary goal is to ensure that veterans receive the care, support and recognition they deserve, and the work the VFW conducts with government agencies and lawmakers is to shape policies and legislation that directly impacts the rights and benefits of veterans.

Local VFW posts provide a gathering place for veterans, friends, supporters and family to interact with each other, share experiences and support each other; providing for a strong sense of camaraderie and community. The synergy created helps veterans and their family members organize social activities, community service projects and fundraisers.

Overall, the VFW is a vital organization dedicated to serving and advocating for veterans.
