Showcasing outstanding ball-striking ability and consistent composure, several members of the Montezuma-Cortez High School boys golf team helped carry the Panthers to a tournament championship at the Monte Vista Country Club on Sept. 6.

Leading the way for M-CHS, as he has throughout the season, was freshman Thayer Plewe, whose four-over-par round of 74 was good enough for second place overall behind Alamosa High School’s Brenden Crowther, who shot a two-over-par round of 72.

Close behind Plewe in the standings was senior Blake Keetch, who continued a trend of season-long success by finishing in fourth place overall with a single-round total of six-over-par 76.

Dolores High School junior JJ Brunner finished seventh with a single-round total of 79. Brunner’s round was especially gratifying given that the junior had not previously registered a single-round score less than 80 in a high school event.

Other M-CHS players who competed in the tournament included Casen Allmon, who looked solid throughout a round that resulted in a score of 85, and Zane Gillstrap, who played solid golf on his way to a round of 89.

Tim Wyman and Nick Mahaffey rounded out members of the M-CHS team who competed and shot round of 98 and 103, respectively.

M-CHS finished first overall in the team standings with a score of 19-over-par. Alamosa finished second overall with a team score of 21-over-par and Pagosa Springs placed third in the team standings with a score of 42-over-par.

Team scores were calculated by adding the top-three individual scores from each team. Five total teams competed in the one-day tournament.
