Leopard Sharks swimmers excel at Seasonal Club Championships

Cody Farias, Delta Suckla win races in Colorado Springs

Closing out a busy summer defined by warm weather and hot results, four members of the Cortez Leopard Sharks Swim Club traveled to Colorado Springs to compete in the Scottie Aschermann Memorial Seasonal Club Championships on Aug. 3-5.

Leading the way for the Leopard Sharks was 14-year-old standout Cody Farias, who flexed his muscles against tough competition and won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:39.17), 200-yard backstroke (2:20.30), 200-yard freestyle (2:04.24) and 500-yard freestyle (5:38.05).

Farias also notched second-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (1:05.59) and 200-yard individual medley (2:19.69), and finished third in the 100-yard freestyle.

Other Top 5 finishes for Farias included fourth-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (26.28) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:15.78).

Also winning multiple events for the Leopard Sharks was 12-year-old breaststroke specialist Delta Suckla, who finished first in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.53) and first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:19.10).

Other Top 5 finishes for Suckla came when she finished third in the 50-yard butterfly (35.38), fourth in the 100-yard backstroke (1:16.65), and fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:48.67). Suckla competed in nine events during the meet.

Also competing for the Leopard Sharks was 11-year-old Houston Hurst, who placed eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:38.17), eighth in the 500-yard freestyle (7:20.88), ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:48.45), and 17th in the 50-yard butterfly (47.41).

Seventeen-year-old Lynda LaPaz also competed for the Leopard Sharks and finished 10th in the 500-yard freestyle (7:00.81) and 15th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:56.03).
