Law enforcement investigates shooting death in Bloomfield

Victim was pronounced dead at the scene

FARMINGTON – A shooting Thursday in Bloomfield left one man dead and authorities are searching for the suspect, according to a news release issued by the Bloomfield Police Department.

“This is a tragic situation, and we are grateful for the immediate response from our area law enforcement agencies,” Bloomfield Police Chief David Karst said in a new release posted on the department’s Facebook page. “Help from the Sheriff’s Office and New Mexico State Police will be instrumental in our investigation.”

The incident occurred about 9:50 a.m. Thursday when law enforcement received a report of possible shots fired on West Maple Street in Bloomfield. At the time, the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office told people in the area to shelter in place.

The shelter-in-place advisory was lifted at 10:18 a.m., and residents were asked to avoid the area of West Maple Street until further notice.

The victim, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene, near the 900 block of West Maple Street, said Bloomfield Police Department spokeswoman Suzanne Moore. Police declined to release details about the shooter.

Moore said the shooting remains under investigation; additional information will be released at a later time.
