Law enforcement investigates death near Ignacio

Sheriff Sean Smith says it’s too soon to release details; CBI has been called
The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office investigated a death Monday at a home in the 400 block of County Road 509 north of Ignacio. Authorities have released few details about the nature of the death. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation has been called to assist.

IGNACIO – Law enforcement made a large response Monday to a home a few miles north of Ignacio where a person was found dead inside the residence.

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office blocks off a home north of Ignacio where deputies investigate a death.

La Plata County Sheriff Sean Smith said authorities received a call around 11 a.m. in the 400 block of County Road 509. Deputies arrived to find a deceased person.

Smith said he could not identify the deceased person, the manner of death or release any other information about the incident as of Monday evening.

“This is very fresh, obviously, and I can’t say much,” he said.

The Sheriff’s Office requested the aid of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Smith said CBI investigators are expected to arrive Tuesday, at which time more information may be available.

“It’s an interesting situation, and we’re still trying to determine the facts,” he said. “We’ll be on scene for an extended period of time with this investigation.”

At least a half dozen law enforcement vehicles were at the scene Monday afternoon. The driveway was cordoned off with yellow police tape. The rest of the county road was open.

Investigators with the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office were seen Monday going in and out of a home north of Ignacio and examining the contents of a truck.

A number of Sheriff’s Office deputies were seen walking in and out of the home and going through the contents of a truck.
