Larry Don Suckla, the newly elected state representative for District 58 and former Montezuma County commissioner, opened the public comment portion of the Montezuma County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday.
“I wanted to come to the first Board of Commissioner’s meeting in the county that I’m from as the new HD elect 58 rep,” Suckla said.
Suckla ran against Kathleen Curry for the seat, and secured 75% of the vote in Montezuma County. Statewide, Suckla won with nearly 55% of the vote.
“They gave me my own office up there at the Capitol, and I wanted to extend a welcome to anybody – the three commissioners, staff, as well as the people of Montezuma County,” said Suckla.
“If you need an office, I want you to use that office like it’s your own.”
“They also gave me my own lawyer,” he said. “What’s interesting about that, is that the lawyer picks the reps, and the reps don’t pick the lawyer,” Suckla said.
The lawyer that chose him, Suckla said, has a wife who’s from Dove Creek, so “he has a vested interest in our county.”
“The seat, HD 58, is your seat, it’s not my seat. I’m just your microphone,” he said. “So if there’s anything you guys need me to do up at the state, let me know, and I’ll see what I can get done for you.”
