Landfill delays recycling for paper, cardboard and plastic

The baler won’t be repaired until mid-August

Recycling pickup for paper, cardboard and plastics has paused ever since the baler at the Montezuma County Landfill started having issues in May.

It’s now projected to be fixed by mid-August, pushed back from the initial estimate of the end of July.

The broken part – the bale strap – is custom built and was delivered and installed recently. However, there’s a programming issue and so the baler is still not working properly.

The Cortez Public Drop-Off is accepting aluminum, steel and tin for recycling. They’re also running a yard debris route.

Once the baler is up and running, the drop off will have bins for cardboard and No. 1 and No. 2 plastics again.

They do not accept glass or paper and haven’t since the pandemic.
