Lambert, Spruell file petitions

Two GOP candidates made Monday's deadline to petition onto the primary ballot. Election officials must now verify that each candidate obtained the proper amount of signatures from registered Republican voters.

Sheriff Dennis Spruell and commissioner hopeful James Lambert filed the paperwork Monday with the Montezuma County clerk's office to be placed on the ballot, said County Clerk Carol Tullis.

"We want to have the results for two or three days," Tullis said. "We have to check all of the signatures."

Neither Spruell nor Lambert received the GOP nod from delegates at last month's general assembly, forcing both candidates to obtain hundreds of signatures in order to be placed on the ballot.

Spruell is seeking a second four-year term as Montezuma County Sheriff, and Lambert is seeking his first term as a Montezuma County commissioner. Sheriff candidate Diane Fox said she opted not to petition onto the ballot after losing the GOP nod to sheriff candidate Steve Nowlin.
