Lake Nighthorse Recreation Area will shorten its hours of operation from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning Monday.

The new hours will be effective through Sept. 30. The reason for the change in hours stems from a shortage of seasonal staff members within the Durango Parks and Recreation Department.

“Our Lake Nighthorse staff has done an amazing job of continuing to provide this recreational opportunity to the community during the COVID pandemic and the unprecedented staffing shortage we have experienced this season,” said Amy Schwarzbach, natural resources manager. “As seasonal staff members leave for college, we simply do not have enough staff to maintain the current hours of operation.”

Hours for the lifeguarded swim beach and Wibit Aqua Park hours will remain 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sept. 6 when the aqua park closes for the season.
