Winners of three of their four games heading into a road matchup against Telluride High School on Feb. 21, the Mancos High School girls basketball team played with composure and confidence from start to finish.
The result for the Lady Jays was a 41-17 victory over the Miners, which pushed their record to 4-15 overall and 4-7 in the San Juan Basin League.
Seniors Isis Jaime and Madi Hale led the way for Mancos in the lopsided contest by scoring 13 points each. Kasey Wallace chipped in six points for the Lady Jays, and junior Tia Imel scored five.
Mancos trailed 7-6 at the end of the first quarter before it outscored Telluride 10-2 in the second quarter and carried a 16-9 lead into halftime. The Lady Jays then put together one of their best offensive halves of the season while outscoring Telluride 25-8 over the game’s final 16 minutes.
Brimming with confidence and hoping to advance to the district tournament, the Lady Jays will hit the road to face Ridgway High School for a winner-take-all pigtail matchup on Feb. 25 at 5:30 p.m.
If Mancos wins, it will face the San Juan Basin League’s top seed in opening round of the Class 2A District 3 Tournament when it plays against Ignacio on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.
