Lady Jays fall to Norwood

Hess scores 13 points in 61-27 loss

Playing on the road against Norwood on Jan. 10, the Mancos High School girls basketball team proved no match for the Class 1A defending state champions, losing 61-27.

Norwood outscored the Bluejays 33-9 in the first half in route to an easy victory.

"We knew it was going to be a tough matchup," said Mancos coach Mallory Morgan. "They run a great screening game, and it's tough for anybody. We need to work on defending the screen and knowing what's going on."

Providing a bright spot for Mancos was sophomore post Nicole Hess, who scored a team-high 13 points. Junior point guard Jessica Gutierrez added 10 points for the Bluejays.

After playing at Newcomb on Jan. 13, Mancos will play at Ignacio on Jan. 16.

"Igancio is going to be a tough team," Morgan said. "They are very scrappy. We need to be ready to go."
