Lady Jays fall to Aztec

Mancos struggles against Class 4A opponent

After opening its season with a win over Newcomb, the Mancos High School girls basketball team travelled to Aztec on Dec. 9 and did not fare as well.

Playing against the Class 4A Tigers, the Bluejays found themselves overwhelmed from start to finish in a 61-21 loss.

"We started out weak and we had a rough night," said Mancos head coach Malory Morgan. "We couldn't buy a bucket and they couldn't miss. They hit eight threes on us and had fresh feet in the game every two minutes."

The Bluejays trailed 20-3 at the end of the first quarter and 41-14 at halftime.

"We just really didn't play well," Morgan said. "Our defense really struggled. On offense, we were doing everything right, but we couldn't score."

Jessica Gutierrez led the Bluejays with 9 points in the loss. Taylor Goff and Nicole Hess added five points each.

After playing at home against Center on Dec. 16 the Bluejays will play their final game before Christmas break at home against Shiprock Northwest on Dec. 18.

"We have a lot to work on," said Morgan, when asked about how her team might improve in advance of upcoming matchups.
