La Plata County Sheriff’s Office responds to ‘accidental shooting’

Law enforcement declines to release any details of incident

The La Plata County Sheriff’s Office has declined to release any information about a shooting that occurred Monday in southwest La Plata County.

According to scanner reports, the Sheriff’s Office responded to an “accidental shooting” about 3 p.m. Monday near the end of Dream Catcher Lane, a remote road in southwest La Plata County.

According to jail logs, a man has been arrested in connection with manslaughter, but the Sheriff's Office has declined to provide details.

“I don’t have any information,” said Sheriff’s Office spokesman Chris Burke on Tuesday. “They are doing an active investigation on the case.”

District Attorney Christian Champagne said he is aware of the case, but he hadn’t received a full briefing about the circumstances.

He said the District Attorney’s Office is providing some “investigative support,” but the Sheriff’s Office has jurisdiction over the shooting investigation.
