Kokanee salmon giveaway scheduled at Nighthorse Reservoir

The Journal

Colorado Parks and Wildlife will give away kokanee salmon Nov. 1, Nov. 8 and Nov. 15 at the boat ramp at Lake Nighthorse. Anyone wanting fish is encouraged to arrive early at the reservoir as the giveaway starts at 3 p.m. and moves quickly.

Participants must present a 2019 Colorado fishing license. The fish are harvested by Colorado Parks and Wildlife during the annual spawning at the reservoir. People interested in receiving fish should bring a cooler or other container. Most of the kokanee are 10 to 13 inches in size. The number of fish that each person will receive depends on how many fish are available and how many people are in line.

Kokanee are a freshwater, land-locked sockeye salmon. It is not native to Colorado but is well-suited to Colorado’s large reservoirs.

Anglers are reminded that snagging kokanee at Lake Nighthorse is prohibited. Those fishing at the reservoir must stay at least 100 yards from the salmon-spawning platform.
