King of the Cage returns

Four Cortez fighters set to compete at the Ute Mountain Casino on Saturday

It’s been nearly four months since Joey Trevino last fought in an official mixed martial arts bout.

On January 16, he took down the defending champ for the Kick Down Flyweight Championship in Aurora, Colorado.

But since then, Trevino has been unable to secure any fights.

He was on the card for a Kickback Boxing match for Judgement MMA, but they couldn’t lock down an opponent. So instead, he coached fellow Impulse MMA fighters Tabitha Trevino, Anthony Chavez, Matt Jackson and Alec Atensio to a combined 3-1 record. His wife Tabitha then went on to win a fight at Tuff-N-Uff in Las Vegas.

“Right now we’re on a win streak, so we’ve just got to keep it going,” Trevino said. “We can’t let up, we’ve got to train hard.”

And after months of training and chomping at the bit, there’s finally a light at the end of the tunnel for Trevino, who is scheduled to fight in the flyweight division at King of the Cage on Saturday, May 14 at the Ute Mountain Casino. While he doesn’t know his opponent – and it has changed twice already – Trevino is eager to get back in action.

“I’m ready,” he said excitedly. “I’ve been dying man. We’ve been sparring every night. Last week I had a black eye for a good week. But it’s one of those things, you’ve got to train hard and get your butt kicked now in order not to get your butt kicked in that cage.”

Tabitha, Chavez and Jackson have also continued training and will also represent Impulse MMA on Saturday at King of the Cage. Tabitha will compete in the strawweight division, Chavez is also a flyweight and Jackson will fight at middleweight.

“We train everything every day,” Trevino said of the group. “We don’t worry about what our opponent’s plan is – as far as the actual fight goes – it’s just imposing our will. We make it our fight.”

Impulse MMA is selling general admission tickets for the fights for $35 or VIP tickets for $75.

They can be purchased at the gym at 23.5 S. Beech St – in the alley behind Blondie’s Trophy Room – or contact Joey Trevino at 970-560-5099.
